India’s SUV market remained the largest automobile segment in May 2025, with Maruti Suzuki reclaiming the top position. Maruti Suzuki overtook Hyundai by leading sales in the SUV category this month, while Tata Motors witnessed mixed results across its models.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza recorded 15,566 units sold in May, marking a year-on-year increase of nearly 10 per cent. In April, Brezza sales stood at 16,971 units, showing a 1 per cent decline compared to April 2024. The Brezza continues as the best-selling sub-4-metre SUV and holds the overall SUV title for Maruti Suzuki.

Hyundai Creta followed closely with combined internal combustion and electric model sales totaling 14,860 units. This figure represents a 1.3 per cent year-on-year rise. The Creta’s sales performance contributed significantly as Hyundai moved up in total vehicle sales by surpassing Tata Motors this month.

Mahindra Scorpio secured third place with 14,401 units sold, reflecting a 5 per cent increase from the 13,717 units it sold in May 2024. In April 2025, Scorpio sales reached 15,534 units, also showing a 5 per cent year-on-year gain. These figures helped Mahindra retain its position as the second-highest-selling automaker in May.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx ranked fourth with 13,584 units sold, an increase of 7 per cent over 12,687 units in May 2024. In April, the Fronx had sold 14,345 units, making it the fifth best-selling SUV at that time.

The Tata Punch entered the top five list by selling 13,133 units in May. Despite a 31 per cent year-on-year decline from 19,052 units in May 2024, the Punch edged past the Tata Nexon by 31 units. In April 2025, the Punch had recorded a 35 per cent drop in sales.

Notably, the Tata Nexon did not feature in the top five SUVs for May 2025. Its absence underscores shifting consumer preferences within the compact SUV market.

May 2025 SUV sales highlight Maruti Suzuki’s strong performance, Hyundai’s recovery through the Creta, and Tata Motors’ mixed results across models. Industry analysts note that competitive pricing, feature updates, and inventory levels have influenced the rankings this month.
